We are all aware of maxims like, ‘Truth will ultimately prevail’ or ‘ultimately, justice will see the light of the day.’ No matter how smart or powerful you are, you cannot overpower the right.
The maxims have again proved their worth with the ouster of the toughest sheriff of the United States, the former Maricopa County sheriff, Joe Arpaio. The ouster would not have happened without the campaign, and hard work carried out by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter and Michael Lacey | Crunchbase
Both Jim and Michael are journalists by profession and own and run the publication house, ‘Phoenix New Times.’ Both have been following Joe Arpaio and his notorious activities closely and moved heaven and earth to expose his dark side and bring some justice into the world. Here’s a brief of their glorious fight to let justice prevail.
Joe Arpaio has been the sheriff of the Maricopa County for about 24 years after winning the seat six times. He was rigidly against immigration of Latinos entering the U.S from the southern border of Mexico.
He got many people to side with him who too did not like the idea of immigrants filtering their country. However, his brutal treatment of them brings forth his ugly side. Illegal immigration is no hideous crime.
However, Joe treated it as such. He would find illegal immigrants and ensure that they go through a concentration camp before they are deported. According to the country’s law, the immigrants should be placed in human prisons and treated well while they wait for deportment to their country.
Going against the law, Joe Arpaio created concentrated camps like the Tent City with absolutely inhuman conditions. The level of torture meted out there knew no bounds. People would not have known what was going on there if Larkin and Lacey were not there. They finally exposed Joe for the person he is to the world.
Their newspaper is famed to explore a variety of social and political issues and bring truth to the limelight. They closely followed and documented the actions of Joe and regularly publish his wrongdoings in his newspaper which did not go well with him.
A pissed Joe framed a wrong case against the duo and got them arrested and gave them a taste of his wrath for publishing on October 18, 2007. However, the pair was released within 24 hours as arrest warrants were forged. Jim and Michael filed a lawsuit against him and won $3.75 million as compensation in late 2013.
They used the money to set up a Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund via which they distributed the lawsuit compensation to Latin-American groups of Arizona.
The fight of Jim and Michael against Joe finally bore fruit when Judge Susan R. Bolton finally declared the 85 years old Joe guilty and sentenced him to six months of imprisonment. But his presidential pardon by President Trump has raised many eyebrows. Its time, we stand by Jim and Michael and ensure that evil people like Joe get what they deserve.
